Riege Implements WIN Platform into Scope

Meerbusch, March 21, 2013 — Riege Software International has successfully implemented the integration of the WIN platform (Worldwide Information Network) into Scope – Riege’s flagship product for air and ocean freight forwarding as well as customs applications. WIN is a common platform for the logistics industry, designed specifically to facilitate electronic communication of shipment data and documentation.

The integration with WIN will produce significant improvements in efficiency and cost-savings for forwarders and agents and it provides a perfect platform for e-Commerce and paperless transfer of documents. No matter which software the partner is using, by integrating with WIN, Scope creates a seamless connection and data exchange.

“Riege now has the most comprehensive interface with WIN and we will work hard to deliver the value together”, said John DeBenedette, WIN’s Managing Director.

Fast Forward Freight, one of the world’s leading independent freight forwarders with headquarters in the Netherlands and branch offices in Belgium, Germany and Nigeria, is the pilot customer for Scope’s implementation of the WIN platform.

“We have been long-term partners of Riege and we appreciate their innovative attitude”, said Robert van Breugel, Fast Forward Freight’s Financial Director. “That’s why we are happy to be a pilot customer for Scope with WIN integrated. As it coincides perfectly with our ambitions to fully incorporate e-freight, which aims to speed up throughput times, improve reliability and planning. Ultimately the project should reduce costs within the transport chain. Already today we see very promising results.”

Johannes Riege, CEO and Founder of Riege, is convinced that Scope and WIN will provide forwarders with capabilities that even some multinationals struggle to match. Therefore he is very pleased to work with WIN and Fast Forward Freight: “I am excited by the potential of this partnership and the excellent results already seen in the pilot project with WIN and Fast Forward Freight. It is very important for our products and services to work closely with the industry leaders”, he says.

The new feature is available in Scope 5.0, which was introduced into service by Riege shortly before the anual WCA Family Week conference in Bangkok, where Riege attended for the first time as an exhibitor.

Riege Receives iF Communication Design Award 2013

Meerbusch, January 24, 2013 — The corporate design of Riege Software International has been awarded the iF Communication Design Award 2013. This may well be the first time that the public relations efforts of a logistics software provider have received this renowned prize. The iF Communication Design Award is one of the most significant international awards for excellence in communications design and is presented annually.

This corporate design, developed by Hamburg-based agency Weissraum Design in partnership with Riege, was recognized in the discipline Communication Design and the category Crossmedia. Weissraum and Riege have created a new, clear, condensed view of freight and logistics. Bits, bytes, and pixels, the tools of software developers, have been styled into virtual 3D worlds.

These succinctly fashioned environments, which often present the employees of Riege, show how easy freight handling has become with the aid of state-of-the-art software. From the logo to the website to brochures and advertisements, through to the graphical user interface of Scope, Riege’s transport management system, the new design addresses all methods of communication and all applications.

“We are very proud that Weissraum has received the iF Communication Award 2013 for Riege’s new corporate design”, explained Benjamin Riege, Marketing Director of the family-owned business. “Our goal was to achieve a high level of succinctness, user-friendliness and ergonomic quality and combine these with the factors that define us – our innovation, our approachability and our level of service.”

All specifications and elements such as the definition of the logos, the typography, and the color or 3D environments are documented in an extensive style guide. The process of development of the various elements took around three years.

The iF Design Awards have been presented each year since 1953. These renowned awards in the three disciplines of products, communications, and packaging are used by their recipients, including global corporations, medium-sized companies, agencies, and design offices, to market their products and services. For the 2013 iF Design Awards, 49 international experts discussed 4,352 entries from 1,920 entrants in 51 countries. In the discipline of communications, a total of 1,086 entries were submitted, with 346 being awarded the iF label and a further 20 being presented with the iF Gold Award.

Riege Simplifies Cloud Computing With New WebSocket Protocol

Meerbusch, May 7, 2012 — With the current version 4.0 of Scope®, Riege Software International has once again simplified cloud computing for its customers. The newly-developed transport management system for air and ocean freight management and customs applications now supports the WebSocket protocol. The HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)-based network protocol was introduced in December 2011 as an open standard to create continuous, bidirectional links between web applications such as Scope and WebSocket or application servers. Riege Software International’s Scope solution is the first of a new generation of applications that operate using this new standard. The WebSocket protocol is considered to be the future standard for client-server communication.

The transportation management system previously used a proprietary protocol for communication between client and server but Riege replaced this with the WebSocket protocol, which allows communication via a single standard TCP port instead of the multiple ports previously required.

Johannes Riege, Managing Director of Riege Software International, sees the development as an important milestone for Scope, for which there are now many language versions and country-specific modules and functions. “The future belongs to software from the cloud. More and more of our customers are benefiting from the advantages, such as less maintenance and lower costs as well as greater security. With 4.0 Scope and the elimination of VPN connections, things are now even easier.”

The previous protocol required the creation of a network connection to one of Riege Software International’s three data centers. This meant an additional workload for the user which can now be eliminated. Moreover, no additional software or hardware is needed, which reduces the internal IT workload significantly.

With Scope version 4.0, customers can use the software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution directly via an encrypted internet connection. The new WebSocket protocol enables a continuous connection between client and server. In addition, firewalls installed by customers do not have to be configured separately in order to enable access to other SSL-enabled websites, such as online banking.

Among the users of Scope as a SaaS solution is the German-Singaporean freight forwarder Pan Asia Logistics. The company has introduced Scope “from the cloud” in all 40 branches. In April 2012 the switchover of the new headquarters of Pan Asia Logistics in Singapore followed. The software used by Pan Asia Logistics is administered centrally in the new Riege data center in Hong Kong.

Riege Showcases Software Solutions at the CNS Partnership Conference 2012

Meerbusch, April 27, 2012 — The 22nd CNS Partnership Conference will take place from 6 to 8 May 2012 in Miami, USA. Riege Software International, an experienced supplier of comprehensive software solutions for air and sea freight management as well as customs, will be a sponsor of the event and present a stand showcasing their technology. The CNS Partnership Conference is seen as the most important annual event for the air freight industry in the USA. Every year about 500 top-level representatives from airlines, freight forwarders, shippers and service providers from the USA and worldwide take part.

This year the conference gathers under the slogan “Together Towards Tomorrow” and will focus in particular on the need for a common approach by the industry towards challenges such as quality management, e-commerce, security, environment, etc. The conference offers opportunities for an exchange of knowledge and experience in critical areas of the industry via numerous presentations, training events and networking sessions.

For more than 10 consecutive years, Riege Software International has taken part in the CNS conference which is a subsidiary of IATA (International Air Transport Association). This year the company is represented by three delegates. Alongside founder and owner Johannes Riege will be Tim Mitchell, Managing Director Americas, and Marketing Director Benjamin Riege will participate for the first time.

“CNS activities place particular emphasis on the implementation of their e-freight initiative.
Riege Supports Implementation of Cargo 2000 at Iberia Cargo

Riege Software International and the Spanish airline Iberia have set up transmission of shipment data as part of the IATA Cargo 2000 initiative. The airline selected DB Schenker and Riege as its pilot partners for the certification process. Both companies are already Cargo 2000-certified and active members of the Cargo 2000 initiative. In January 2012 Iberia Cargo announced that it has earned the Cargo 2000 certification.

Meerbusch, April 12, 2012 — Since 2009 Riege Software International has offered a web-based platform based on its Transport Management System Scope® which enables transport chain participants to plan, monitor and improve the quality of shipments in line with the Cargo 2000 initiative of IATA (International Air Transport Association). Riege’s software solution is Cargo 2000-certified.

As a Cargo 2000 member, DB Schenker is using Riege’s software. Iberia Cargo had selected DB Schenker and Riege as its pilot partners for the certification process for its membership of Cargo 2000. In the pilot project all DB Schenker shipments from Madrid to destinations in Europe and North America were processed using Scope. Fernando Terol, General Manager at Iberia Cargo, was very satisfied with the results. “With DB Schenker and Riege Software International we have chosen two experienced Cargo 2000 members as our pilot partners. The results are excellent. Moreover, the performance of Riege’s software solution as well as their service and expertise have deeply impressed us.”

As a prerequisite for the certification Iberia Cargo developed an in-house IT platform meeting the CDMP Cargo 2000 regulations. The platform is necessary for exchanging information with other members of the IATA program. During this process, Iberia Cargo has worked closely together with Riege. Air freight carriers, air freight forwarders, handling agents and other logistics companies around the world participate in Cargo 2000. The aim of the initiative is to make the transport processes in the air freight industry more reliable and efficient through exact process analyses and harmonized quality standards.

Airlines and forwarders can achieve substantial improvements in their performance with Cargo 2000 at very low investment costs. On Riege’s Cargo 2000 platform, all processes are made available to all participants on a bundled basis. This enables faster comparison of all processes which can then be optimized on an ongoing basis. Alongside the reliable exchange of information Scope users can not only monitor all processes but also respond quickly as soon as any problems occur. The Cargo 2000 module can be connected to other Transport Management Systems through an interface. In addition to the official Cargo 2000 requirements, the Riege Software International solution enables all status requests in real time. Through the complete integration of shipment monitoring within the freight management software Scope can offer true added-value compared to other systems.

New Riege Customers at the Turn of The Year

Meerbusch, March 14, 2012 — Several forwarders have migrated to Riege Software’s new Scope® transport management system for all their forwarding operations at the start of 2012. Riege Software International, a leading provider of software solutions for air and sea freight transport and customs, first presented the innovative Scope software to the industry at the transport logistic 2009 trade fair. Scope was developed by Riege in anticipation of rapidly changing market requirements. Since its launch, there has been strong demand for the advanced system, which is characterized by fast, efficient and multi-functional usage together with ultra-modern and user-friendly software architecture.

One of the new customers in Germany is the Honold Logistik Gruppe, which now manages its air and sea freight activities in its Neu-Ulm branch using Scope.

Scope continues to advance in other parts of Europe. For example, the Swiss company General Transport AG, based in Basel, has been using the Riege software product for its sea freight imports and exports as well as the air freight module since the beginning of the year. In General Transport’s Zurich office Scope will go live with an additional, specially-developed software package for e-dec, the centralized electronic cargo processing system of the Swiss customs authority.

In the Benelux, additional Scope installations have been undertaken this year by the new subsidiary Riege Software International BV, which was established last year. In Belgium, the logistics company Fast Forward Freight is now using the innovative software solution in its Antwerp (sea freight), Liege (air freight) and Brussels (air freight) branches. In Germany, the company uses Scope successfully since November 2011 in its branch office in Frankfurt. Two more branches will be opened in Germany during 2012 and equipped with Scope. The software will also be installed at the Dutch company’s branches in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Venlo. Scope’s full Dutch customs package, including DGVS and C-sum, will be used in these locations. Riege is currently developing a new AOG (Aircraft on Ground) module in cooperation with Fast Forward Freight in the Netherlands. This will be the basis for the introduction of a simple workflow management system in Scope.

The start of 2012 also saw roll-out of Scope at the Dutch air and sea freight specialist Ronex. Its branches in Amsterdam (air freight), Rotterdam (sea freight), Apeldoorn (sales office) and Maastricht (road transport and warehousing) and are also using the module for the Dutch customs system Sagitta (Import/Export/NCTS). During 2012 Scope will be implemented in the Ronex Curacao branch office.

Riege Opens Data Center in Hong Kong

Meerbusch, December 20, 2011 — With the opening of a new data center in Hong Kong in November 2011 Riege Software International, a leading provider of software solutions for air and sea freight forwarding as well as customs applications, has now created a rapid and secure cloud solution for its Asian region clients. The new hosting center, in Hong Kong’s Kwai Chung district, expands the software company’s existing IT infrastructure currently located in Frankfurt and head office in Meerbusch. Among the first users of the new center is a long-standing client, Pan Asia Logistics. The logistics services company, with its head office in Singapore, uses the transport management system Scope from Riege, which is provided as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

The new data center in Hong Kong boasts the highest international standards in terms of building and data security, is ISO-certified and is operated in line with ecological practices by Japanese telecommunications supplier NTT Com Asia together with Green Management. Riege is thus able to offer its clients in the Asian region the same services as in Europe. This includes hosting the new transport management system Scope and ensuring availability of all services round-the-clock 365 days a year.

Until recently, clients in the Far East were hosted in European computer centers. However, this was unsatisfactory in the long term, according to Johannes Riege, managing director of the software company. In Asia, Riege handles about 30 clients and their numerous branch offices, with increasing demand for these services. “We are growing strongly in Asia with our own offices in Hong Kong since 1994. The new data center was therefore a logical step, since we bear a heavy responsibility with our transport management solutions.”

The background to this development is a lack of sufficient broadband capacity available between Europe and Asia. This meant that speed and availability of data from the European data centers could not be permanently ensured. Riege’s IT department in Meerbusch who control European operations and IT infrastructure are now also responsible for the new data center. The initial contact person for regional clients is the branch office team in Hong Kong.

In the last ten years Pan Asia Logistics has developed into one of the leading logistics companies in East Asia. The company has about 40 branches, mainly in Asia. In 2011, Riege’s new transport management system Scope was rolled out to all Pan Asia offices. The new head office in Singapore is scheduled to go live in spring 2012. Pan Asia Logistics uses Scope as a SaaS solution. The software is located centrally in the Riege data center. The outsourcing produces savings in hardware, maintenance and staff costs, while increasing the security and quality at Pan Asia Logistics.

IATA e-freight Maximises Data Quality

“Scope” from Riege Software International enables paperless air freight transport for companies

The e-freight initiative of IATA (International Air Transport Association) aims to introduce paperless air freight transport on all relevant routes by 2015. A major challenge is the electronic transmission of accompanying data and documents between all institutions and service providers involved in the transport chain. “Scope”, the transport management system from Riege Software International, is ideally designed for this task. This has been confirmed with the introduction of e-freight between Düsseldorf-based forwarder Globaltrans and the airlines defined in the start phase.

Meerbusch, October 18, 2011 — At present, 44 countries, 384 airports, 33 airlines and 1,658 freight forwarders are taking part in the e-freight initiative, according to IATA. The objective of the project, which started in 2007, is to replace the substantial quantity of accompanying freight documents with electronic data exchange. Regardless of the shipment size, up to 20 documents are required per shipment, and with the multitude of necessary copies this can add up to several kgs of weight. According to IATA, the equivalent of 80 B747 freighters could be saved each year with electronic data exchange.

“The topic of e-freight has a very high priority for us,” says Kay Uwe Gretsch, director of Globaltrans GmbH, which is based in Düsseldorf. In September 2011 the company’s air freight division received a ‘green light’ from Lufthansa Cargo and Air Canada. The two airlines each check the data quality and processes of freight forwarders before accepting them into the paperless handling scheme. The performance of the transport management system had a substantial share in the smooth admission process, according to Frank Bramer, consolidation manager at Globaltrans. “Scope is a very innovative user-friendly system that relieves our staff of significant workload and supplies excellent data quality. All the requirements for e-freight are contained within the software and make handling very easy.”

Lufthansa Cargo, which has declared the IATA e-freight initiative as a strategic objective, was also very satisfied with the results of the test phase. “The data quality that Globaltrans delivered to us with Scope was excellent. That is why we were able to switch over quickly to real paperless shipping,” explains J. Florian Pfaff, Vice President Area Management Germany. Since 2010 Lufthansa Cargo has offered paperless air freight transport within Germany and also worldwide from all locations where e-freight is already available. The airline’s experts also carefully checked the transport management system that delivered this data. “My staff were very impressed by Scope. The Riege system is extremely user-friendly and offers smart functions,” Pfaff points out.

Globaltrans will now gain from numerous advantages created by paperless document handling. Alongside a lower environmental impact, the time and cost savings, improved shipment quality and reliability will be the key benefits. Johannes Riege, managing director of Riege Software International, is delighted at the positive feedback from forwarders and airlines. “We are very satisfied with the results at Globaltrans. Our joint know-how, built up over many years, has flown into the development of Scope. This has led to real innovations that support users in their daily work.”

After this good start Kay Uwe Gretsch would now like to move ahead even faster. “My aim was originally to handle half of our air freight shipments as paperless by the end of the year. But unfortunately most of the airlines are not yet ready,” the Globaltrans director emphasises.

Module Developed for Swiss Customs

Riege Software International incorporates customs clearance in transport management system Scope

The Swiss customs authority (EZV) has introduced e-dec, a central, electronic cargo processing system that has replaced the former customs procedures and forms. Riege Software International has now developed a special module for Swiss customs clearance. Customers working with the Scope transport management system (TMS) now benefit from a smart and time-saving solution for customs clearance in Switzerland.

Meerbusch, August 24, 2011 — The aim of the EZV is to offer customers the option of handling import, transit and export goods by electronic means in line with largely harmonized guidelines. This simplifies customs clearance and thus results above all in cost savings and greater efficiency when customers work with a powerful IT system.

Riege has therefore developed a module to connect the EZV customs procedure with its TMS Scope which is now available to all Scope users. The module covers the processes: e-dec Import (import customs clearance), e-dec Export (export customs clearance) and e-dec EVV (electronic customs receipt). In addition, Scope has been certified by the Swiss customs authority for the IT-based transit clearance NCTS, which is obligatory for international transit, as well as for handling as a Registered Shipper or Consignee (ZV/ZE).

“Switzerland is an important economic location. We have exact knowledge of the customs requirements of this non-EU country. This know-how has been used in the development of the Scope customs module,” explained Johannes Riege, Managing Director of Riege Software International, at the market launch of the new product. Andreas Fenner, formerly a customs declaration specialist with Swiss certification and now managing director of the Riege branch office at Nürensdorf, close to Zurich, played an important role in designing and developing the Swiss customs module. He explains: “We are responding to the strong demand from our customers with the new Scope module for Swiss customs. They can now benefit from much more efficient processes in customs clearance.”

The Scope transport management system is characterized above all by its logical, transparent structures and diverse intelligent functions such as the real-time plausibility check. All major customs regulations are stored within the software and can be displayed to the user according to the context. Moreover, the software includes an automatic freight transport cost calculation function and a comprehensive administration of article and tariff numbers.

Scope incorporates specific modules for customs clearance in Germany (ATLAS), the USA (AES), the Netherlands (Sagitta) and now Switzerland (e-dec). Furthermore, the TMS system covers all security requirements, such as the Import Control System (ICS), which was introduced on 1 January 2011. The IATA quality and sustainability initiatives such as Cargo 2000 and e-freight are also supported by Scope with special modules.

New Opportunities for Smaller Businesses

A New TMS "Software as a Service" (SaaS) solution by Riege Software International lowers costs and improves security

Riege Software International GmbH has developed a terminal solution for its transport management system (TMS) Scope. Small and mid-sized forwarders, handling agents and industrial suppliers will especially benefit from the solution by the IT service provider located in Meerbusch near Dusseldorf, Germany. With the new software, users can handle export and import orders for air freight, sea freight and customs clearance without time-consuming installation procedures and at moderate cost.

Meerbusch, July 25, 2011 — In the past, small to medium-sized forwarders and industrial suppliers had to invest in special software and comprehensive internal IT infrastructure in order to handle transport orders and to take part in ATLAS customs procedures. Riege’s terminal solution comes as “software as a service” and this approach helps to minimize operational costs and optimizes processes. The software can be accessed from any location via the web. The solution also simplifies data collection and generating reports.

With the Scope terminal solution, users benefit from all the logistics software features for air freight, sea freight and customs clearance, via secure customer access over the internet. The only prerequisite for the use of the SaaS software is a computer (minimum requirement is a Windows XP operating system) with an internet connection for remote access to the server. The user benefits from the experience and systems of the service provider and avoids the risks of maintaining local IT infrastructure and software. Master data and the purchased modules, for example the air freight export application, are instantly available to the user and are accessible from anywhere in the world using any computer connected to the Internet. With a terminal solution, even multi-user operations where several employees simultaneously handle customs clearance, will not incur high costs. Additionally, the users have access to all current and future customs regulations.

With our Scope terminal application companies can work globally. The solution can be adapted to changing business processes. That’s why small and medium-sized companies will especially benefit from it”, says Johannes Riege, General Manager of Riege Software International.

ince all data is stored at Riege Software International’s data center, customers are provided with additional security. In the case of local system failure, virus contamination or fraud, no data is lost since it is safely stored on systems in Frankfurt and Meerbusch, where Riege administrators perform regular backups and updates. This allows the user to cut down on the services of a local IT partner. All relevant code lists are automatically updated with fast and easy access to additional functions such as the electronic customs tariff (EZT).

The solution can also be equipped with an accounting interface (i.e. Datev) for easy invoicing. Thus all internal processes are optimally connected. Since the terminal solution is paid by a one-time connection fee only, customers save investments in hardware, ensuring costs remain low.

Branch Office for the Benelux Region

Riege Software International offers special software solutions for the Benelux countries

Expanding its presence in Europe, Riege Software International opened a branch in the Netherlands in spring 2011. The new managing director Benelux and contact person in the Leersum office is Henk Boorsma.

Meerbusch, June 21, 2011 — With offices in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America, Riege Software International has been present in the market for more than 25 years, providing comprehensive logistics software services and has over 850 installations of its software solutions in more than 120 countries. The new branch office in The Netherlands puts Riege in a position to serve small and medium-sized firms in particular but also forwarders, carriers and shippers in any of the Benelux countries. Henk Boorsma, 44, an industry professional with more than 20 years of experience in the logistics sector, heads a team of Dutch speaking experts. They serve local transport companies, forwarders, freight handlers and manufacturing companies.

Since its foundation in 1985, the family-owned company, based in Meerbusch, Germany, has offered innovative software solutions for air and sea freight, ground handling and customs clearance, and has extended its product range with country-specific modules. In particular, Scope, the new modular software solution for air and sea freight management, developed and implemented by Riege Software International, has recently been extended with specifications for the Dutch market. Country-specific components, such as a direct connection to the Dutch customs system Sagitta, enable ecustoms clearances for imports, exports and warehousing (including NCTS and C/sum and DGVS). These have been implemented along with interfaces to accounting software like Exact Online, Exact Globe and Account View.

Users in the Benelux countries thus benefit from a multi-functional software solution that offers a free choice of modules for all operational requirements in sea and air freight, customs clearance as well as for handling agents. Among the first clients of the new branch office are transport companies 2Achieve and Globcon Logistics who are currently using the Scope software solution. Henk Boorsma is very satisfied with the feedback from the markets so far: “With the fully integrated customs and interface to accounting packages, Scope is ready to serve the Dutch freight forwarders with a modern application. Currently we are talking to a lot of potential customers who are very interested in benefiting from Scope as well.”

Scope Connects Partner

Riege Software International presented new functions of its transport management system at transport logistic 2011

Cross-border freight shipments face high barriers in terms of full electronic documentation and optimal physical transportation. Help is provided by the new transport management system Scope from Riege Software International. The company presented the system’s new features at the transport logistic 2011 trade fair from 10 – 13 May. The Meerbusch-based software specialists welcomed many interested visitors to their stand and held detailed discussions.

Meerbusch, May 18, 2011 – Riege Software International’s transport management system Scope represents a major innovation in logistics software due to the depth of its functions and its powerful performance. The Meerbusch-based software specialists developed it as a completely new successor to the Procars system over the course of several years. The result is a comprehensive new solution which covers the complete process chain of an international shipment and which connects all involved parties with each other in terms of information technology.

Better mood at trade fair than in 2009

As in 2009, Riege Software International again had its own stand in Hall B2 at transport logistic. Johannes Riege, managing director of the family-owned company, summed up this year’s participation positively. “The mood at the fair was better than in 2009 overall and the economic recovery is being felt by many companies. The quality of our discussions was very good as a result. There was very strong interest in Scope with its new functions and modules.”

New functions and modules

The new in-depth functions required for the various parties involved in the processes as well as numerous newly-developed modules make Scope into a universal solution that simplifies and makes air and sea freight transportation more efficient.

All data only has to be entered once. All necessary information and legal regulations are contained within the system. The user is automatically provided and supported with all the required information when dealing with a shipment. Moreover, the diverse reporting and documentation functions ensure that all steps are completely transparent and thus enable the transport chain to be optimized. Scope is permanently updated and new functions are integrated into the system in order to provide forwarders, carriers, handling agents and all other members of the supply chain with a universal platform for air and sea freight management.

Solution for handling agents

With the development of “Scope Handling Agent” last year, Riege Software International integrated another important player in the air freight transport chain. This module covers the special requirements of freight handling companies which work on behalf of forwarders. Transmission of shipment data and transportation orders or updates about the handling status of a shipment are often still made by fax or phone. With the help of Scope Handling Agent, mistakes can be avoided and the workload of manual data entry reduced. Agents thus save valuable time and costs.

Solution for customs and security

Scope also incorporates special modules for the complex processes of customs clearance. All the formalities for imports and exports, invoicing and tax payments can be made on one single user interface. In addition to the German ATLAS system, Scope now also includes systems for Switzerland, the USA and (since spring 2011) the Netherlands which have been certified by the respective customs authorities.

Moreover, Scope incorporates all the requirements in the area of security, such as the import control system (ICS) which has been law since January 1, 2011. The quality and sustainability efforts of IATA (International Air Transport Association) such as the Cargo 2000 and e-freight initiatives are supported by Scope with special modules.

With these comprehensive functions, its easy usage and the option of adding further solutions such as ERP systems via interfaces, Scope is ideally positioned to provide an end-to-end flow of information for all partners in air and sea freight.

Electronic Pre-Registration Simplifies Processes

Riege Software International provides customers with efficient ICS function

To enable EU countries to monitor and conduct security analyses before air freight, sea freight and overland goods arrive, carriers and transport operators must register their shipments with the relevant customs office in the form of an electronic ENS report, also known as the “Entry Summary Declaration” (or ‘Entry-SumA’). This is part of the ICS (Import Control System) that was introduced on January 1, 2011. To meet this requirement, service companies need all relevant information from export forwarders in good time. Riege Software International has integrated the new customs procedure in its software solutions Procars and Scope. Users such as Logwin report positive results.

Meerbusch, May 9, 2011 — The ICS procedure was introduced punctually on January 1, 2011, in response to the developments and restrictions in the area of freight security. Importing carriers must give customs authorities an electronic ENS declaration before the freight arrives in the EU in order to prevent suspicious or even dangerous shipments reaching European countries. Customs officials analyze the shipments for import and, if necessary, can refuse their entry.

Carriers and transport operators rely on forwarders to send them the shipping information in order for them to electronically transmit the freight data to customs in good time. At present, this information frequently exists only in printed form on the freight documents. The implementation of this new law combined with the increasing speed in the flow of goods and he collection and forwarding of required information, demands an uninterrupted electronic data exchange between all partners involved in the process. Manufacturers, suppliers, forwarders, carriers and customs should be able to exchange relevant information about the shipment in electronic form.

With its specialized software for air freight, sea freight and customs clearance, Riege Software International offers efficient solutions to meet all the rules in good time. Electronic data exchange with Riege’s Procars and Scope systems, simplifies the workload for international freight forwarders and prevents goods from arriving late or from being denied entry at an EU border due to missing documents.

Logwin’s Air + Ocean business unit has been using the additional functions since mid-December 2010 when Riege Software International released them via an update of Logwin’s Procars software system. After the first few months in operation, Patrick Braun, team leader TMS Central IT for Logwin Air + Ocean, reports positive feedback. “The solution from Riege simplifies the procedure and gives us more process certainty. The users are shown the necessary and correct information, such as the HS codes and the goods’ tariff numbers, when the shipments are entered. These are then transmitted via an interface with all other data to the carriers.” The latter rely on the information from the forwarder and have to register the data with the EU customs branches. “With the Riege software we have a secure and efficient solution for this. We are very satisfied with it,” the Logwin manager confirms.

New Software for Handling Agents

Since mid-2010 Riege Software International has offered with its newly-developed product ‘Scope Handing Agent’ a solution specially designed for the needs of air freight handling companies and which covers their logistics processes. It is targeted at regional and gateway handling agents in the air freight transportation chain and also contains functions for airline handling. The newly-introduced software solution from IT provider Riege is part of the modular software system Scope, which supports the entire air and sea freight operations as well as all customs applications. The service is already being used by THS Aircargo Services GmbH.

Meerbusch, Germany, 1 February 2011. — During everyday handling processes in warehouses and at airports the priorities for air cargo service providers are controlled acceptance of goods, efficient management of internal warehouse processes and a punctual provision of the goods at the outbound distribution point. The internal warehouse processes in this sector include building up the ULD (Unit Load Device), checking the shipments and internal transportation. Among the other tasks of typical handling agents are providing local or feeder transportation for air freight forwarders and road feeder services. Scope Handling Agent thus incorporates a customised transport disposition programme for these requirements as well as programmes to manage handling processes.

To date, communications between forwarders and handling companies have often been prone to error and staff-intensive. In particular, transmission of shipment data and transport orders or responses regarding the current handling status of a shipment are often still carried out by fax or phone. With the help of a flexible interface to the Transport Management Systems of the forwarders errors can be avoided and the workload for manual data entry can be reduced. Agents thus save valuable time and money. Electronic interchange between all players in the air freight sector is becoming more and more important due to the further implementation of quality assurance systems such as the Cargo 2000 initiative or the European integration of customs systems.

Riege Software International cooperates closely with experts in air freight security and with Scope Handling Agent offers a solution that enables handling agents to carry out and to document their processes in accordance with the current EU security regulations and the recommendations of the Civil Aviation Authority.

Since mid-2010 the software has successfully been in use at THS Aircargo Services GmbH in Norderstedt (Hamburg). “With Scope Handling Agent we can support the processes of all those involved as well as monitor the shipments and their security status within the transport chain through the IT. As well as the process certainty the software makes faster handling possible and thus reduces waiting times,” explains the company’s managing director, Rüdiger Suhrke.

Cloud Computing Saves alpha trans Thousands

High annual cost savings with new TMS solution from Riege Software International

One year ago Munich-based freight forwarder alpha trans introduced “Scope”, the new transport management software for air and sea cargo from Riege Software International, as a pilot customer. The textile logistics forwarder now estimates the annual cost savings from eliminating its own server capacity at more than 25,000 euros a year.

Meerbusch, October 12, 2010 — Since 2009 the five branches of alpha trans have gradually introduced the Scope modules for air freight imports and exports as well as customs. After using the earlier version of Scope for all its freight forwarding orders, alpha trans issued a tender for a new TMS solution which Riege Software International successfully won. The new software was then developed in close cooperation with alpha trans, incorporating the requirements from head office and the branch offices in terms of forwarding, customs and book-keeping. Riege creates software solutions for its clients by using “private clouds”. Their use and access are exclusively available to one single client in order to guarantee data control, security and quality.

Since the end of 2009 all the alpha trans branches have been using the Scope modules for air cargo imports and exports as well as customs. Some 70 employees process about 3,000 forwarding orders every month with the new software. Staff are able to access directly all the relevant information which is stored on servers in the Riege computing centre.

“Thanks to the new Scope solution, we can evaluate information better, have more transparency and less manual workload,” commented Friedemann Eichenseher, managing director of alpha trans.
The Scope system enables forwarding staff to administer all types of documents and has open interfaces, such as for book-keeping or customer-specific systems. Customers are thus able to generate substantial productivity improvements, even though these cannot be calculated precisely in advance. Moreover, there are cost savings by eliminating the use of in-house server capacity. Alpha trans is saving 25,000 euros a year just by eliminating the hardware, according to Eichenseher.

Johannes Riege, managing director of Riege Software International, is delighted with the results for pilot customer alpha trans. “Scope is a real quantum leap for transport management systems,” he explains. “The completely new graphical user interface, the user-friendly intelligent functionality and the compatibility result in significant improvements in efficiency and reduce costs substantially, as the case of alpha trans shows.”

The Scope module for sea freight exports is currently being developed and will be delivered with release 2.10 at the end of this year. Alpha trans will then use all the Scope modules in its branches.

About alpha trans

The alpha trans Luft- und Seefrachtspedition GmbH & Co. KG was founded 30 years ago in Munich. It is a subsidiary of the textile logistics service provider Barth+Co. KG, Hallbergmoos. Alpha trans employs 70 staff at its head office and at five branches. In 2009 it generated revenues of about 30 million euros.

Logistics Software in Shanghai

Riege Software International presents its software solution Scope at transport logistic China 2010

At this year’s International Exhibition for Logistics, Telematics and Transport which is being held from June 8 to 10 in China, Riege Software International from Meerbusch, Germany, is showcasing its new logistics software “Scope” to Asian trade visitors. Just in time for the fair the user interface of the modular cargo handling system is also available in a Chinese language version.

Meerbusch, June 2, 2010 – Despite the international economic crisis the Asian economy is still growing and acting as a driver for the international transport industry. German logistics service providers such as Riege Software International see further great potential in China and are presenting their innovations at the fair, which takes place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SCNIEC). “The fair is an important meeting point, especially to acquire new customers and maintain existing contacts. Personal relationships play a vital role in Asia’s business world,” explains Johannes Riege, managing director of Riege Software International.

The IT provider from Germany, which operates its own office in Hong Kong, is a regular exhibitor at the Asian trade show. This year it is showing the modular logistics software Scope at North Rhine-Westphalia’s joint stand in the German pavilion. Riege Software International has developed a Chinese language version of Scope particularly for Asian markets and which is being introduced at the fair. The implementation in simplified Chinese adds to the already existing German and English versions. As a solution which is used worldwide for sea and air freight as well as customs, Scope combines various functionalities with modern software architecture and technology on the basis of standardized middleware and database solutions (MySQL or Oracle).

The innovative IT solution also provides a special module for handling agents. International forwarders as well as exporting and importing companies appreciate the advantages of the system which was already introduced to German customers last year. Scope can be efficiently integrated in a user-friendly manner into existing and customer-specific applications such as ERP systems or other eSolutions. Accordingly the intuitive user interface optimally meets customized requirements. It is also suitable for Asian companies or European enterprises with subsidiaries and branch offices in Asia.

At transport logistic China 2010 Riege Software International can be found in hall E2 at stand 415.

Meerbusch, February 22, 2010 — The aim of the EZV is to offer customers the option of handling import, transit and export goods by electronic means in line with largely harmonized guidelines. This simplifies customs clearance and thus results above all in cost savings and greater efficiency when customers work with a powerful IT system.

The requirements for e-booking differ from airline to airline, for example Lufthansa Cargo and Air France Cargo-KLM Cargo. In addition, not all airlines even offer e-booking yet. Therefore it’s important for the forwarder’s e-booking system to seamlessly manage the differences during the booking process.

Riege Software International has recently incorporated the product and service requirements of Air France Cargo-KLM Cargo into the forwarding software package Procars. Using the e-booking system ensures the airline complies with the standards and demands set by the airfreight association IATA. The forwarder also benefits since all relevant data for the shipment of the goods as well as the respective booking confirmations are immediately available to the user. Various customers of the logistics software provider are currently using the solution, among them Logwin, DB Schenker, Emotrans and Geis SDV.

“It’s in the interest of our forwarding customers that further airlines offer electronic booking systems in the future. We’ve already established the technical prerequisites for this,” explains Johannes Riege, managing director of the IT provider based in Meerbusch, Germany.

The developers have also integrated an automated booking system for advanced scheduled shipments into the Procars software solution. This transfers the booking data directly to the supporting airline, either by IATA Cargo IMP messages or automatically via fax message. Moreover, an electronic ad hoc booking is possible. The complete integration and electronic data transfer directly from the registration of goods not only reduces errors and streamlines the process, it also reduces disruptions for the user. With the introduction of product and service code tables by Air France Cargo-KLM Cargo, a further major airline is now available for e-booking with Procars.

Improved Data Exchange with Airlines

Global Connect a freight forwarding software solution from Riege Software International improves data documentation through additional automatic arrival status

A new automatic arrival status application from Riege Software International improves documentation of the transport chain for air freight forwarders. The application extension is integrated into the Global Connect software solution. Global Connect receives status updates and documents from airlines and forwarders, converts them into desired formats and exchanges these messages between partners through a Cargo Community System (CCS). Details of a shipment’s arrival at its destination airport have not always been available to the forwarding agent because only a few airlines provide the designated “arrival status” (ARR). Forwarding agents and their customers will benefit from the new automatic arrival status generated by Global Connect which enables specific tracking of a shipment.

Meerbusch, den 23. November 2009 - The latest release of Global Connect software includes detailed information about arrival and status of a shipment making processes within the air freight industry more effective and transparent. Airlines provide forwarders with status reports for every shipment through “Cargo Interchange Message Procedures” (Cargo IMP): the exact time of receipt, departure, arrival, discharge and ready for pick-up. Often forwarders lack the exact arrival time data at the destination because this information is generally not provided by the airline. Riege Software International now bridges this gap by analyzing additional information from other status messages contained in the airline’s Cargo IMP messages. After analyzing the data the software creates an artificial “arrival status”. This additional status is based on real airline data included within the transmitted “discharge status” but which was previously not analyzed. Global Connect identifies the date and the time within this data and subsequently generates an additional data-set. Forwarders are thus able to monitor shipments and attain complete transport chain documentation.

“Integrated and transparent process documentation is a core customer demand for air freight forwarders. The additional application of Global Connect allows forwarders to monitor data without additional costs and make it easily available to their customers,” explains Johannes Riege, managing director of Riege Software International in Meerbusch, Germany. To improve operations further it is simple possible to integrate the software into existing transport management structures. Integrated tracking and tracing is therefore no longer a problem for air freight forwarders.

Especially in economically difficult times it is essential that forwarders gain an important competitive advantage using an efficient software solution. In order to improve the data quality, operate a transparent order management system and increase the efficiency of processes it pays for air freight forwarders to install an advanced software solution such as Global Connect.

Logwin’s overseas media deliveries go faster with Scope ATLAS Export from Riege Software International

Logistics services provider Logwin from Frankfurt offers industry solutions for the media and press. When daily newspapers are shipped, then time plays a decisive role. Since July 1, 2009 media shipments, such as newspapers or magazines, that Logwin exports to overseas countries or countries with a special financial status have had to be registered electronically with customs through the ATLAS system. Logwin uses the ATLAS Export solution of Riege Software International for this purpose.

Meerbusch, September 21, 2009 — Logwin carries out an average of 40,000 to 50,000 export registrations each year in Frankfurt with the Scope ATLAS Export programme. Wilhelm Hülpüsch, Head of Aircargo Solutions Media for Logwin in Frankfurt, explains what is really vital for the logistics company: “Our most important software requirements for ATLAS Exports are flexibility, reliability and the option to integrate it into our processes and existing IT structure. We need an individual and suitable solution that is specially designed for systemised freight.”

Riege Software International has therefore adapted data entry with a special interface for Logwin. As soon as Logwin receives data for an export order from its customer, these are displayed in Scope ATLAS Export ready for processing since the data are automatically forwarded from external ERP systems directly into the Riege system. This guarantees Logwin and its customers, which include large German publishing groups, optimal process connections.

The Scope ATLAS Export user can always link the data from a trading invoice to an MRN (Movement Reference Number), deal with the export registration, delivery or transport information and rapidly forward the appropriate registration to the customs authorities. The export process is completed with the sent confirmation and the following sent record.

The logistics company handles customs formalities itself since the time factor is especially decisive for its industry solution and shipments must be exactly planned in terms of time. Scope ATLAS Export helps the user with a simple-to-use user interface, integrated help functions, specific customs terms and code lists automatically recorded in the system as well as an integrated plausibility check (validation) so that the export registrations can be sent technically correct to the customs authorities.

Hülpüsch confirms that the feared chaos with the switchover to the electronic procedure did not occur. “From our point of view, communications with customs have functioned perfectly since July,” he says. Users are satisfied with the user-friendliness of the programme. The basic data is stored in Scope ATLAS Export and can be called up for use at any time. The transport company saves valuable time with the export control option that the system offers. Logwin has used Riege Software International for its air freight shipments since 1993. The individual and reliable system solution of the IT provider has also proven itself with ATLAS exports.

Riege Software International Supports e-freight

New software enables paperless freight and helps the environment

Forwarders wanting to join the IATA e-freight project can now take advantage of a new software module from Riege Software International, a leading provider of software for air and sea freight as well as customs. In order to reduce paper usage in air freight, IATA launched its e-freight project for electronic data documentation in 2004. With the flexible new solution Procars, importers and exporters can in future simply and rapidly generate and transmit their transport documents by electronic means, carry out customs transactions and thus participate in the IATA e-freight project. Procars, the modular freight management system for air and sea freight and customs, thus simplifies processes in the air freight chain with the additional e-freight module.

Meerbusch, August 19, 2009 — In 2010 worldwide air freight traffic is supposed to be handled as paper-free as possible. With Procars all the necessary processes for freight transport can be managed easily. Paperless air waybills can be quickly created with the new software solution and electronically transmitted through the IATA CargoIMP Standard to air cargo carriers. According to the airline association IATA, $1.2 billion a year could be saved in the air cargo industry by working without paper. Around the world an average of 38 freight documents are created per shipment. This mass of paperwork could fill 39 freighters every year. By reducing paper usage the air cargo industry can make an important contribution to environmental protection.

The following countries are so far taking part in the IATA e-freight project: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Dubai, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Luxemburg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Great Britain, Switzerland, Malaysia and the USA. Shippers, airlines and recipients want to handle all shipments from and to these countries electronically-only from 2010 onwards wherever possible.

The logistics provider DB Schenker has already used the freight transport management system of Riege Software International for many years. Moreover, the company is also using the extension of the comprehensive Procars system with success. “DB Schenker will roll out the IATA e-freight project worldwide. With Riege Software International we have a reliable partner which is supporting us with a programme extension for this project. The IATA e-freight project helps to speed up customs clearance, to save costs and to reduce sustainably the environmental impact,” declared Thomas Mack, Vice President Air Freight at DB Schenker.

Other customers of Riege Software International are already using the new e-freight module. Procars, a fully integrated software solution for air and sea freight, offers users a simple e-freight solution for paper-free freight management. With Procars the company is also indirectly helping to improve the CO2 footprint of its clients.

Riege Software International Certified by Cargo 2000

Riege Software International offers Cargo 2000 members a reliable Cargo 2000 Data Management Platform (CDMP). At the start of July the software provider received certification by Cargo 2000. The Riege Software International quality management system thus meets all the requirements of the Cargo 2000 standards. With the new Procars Cargo 2000 module shipments can be controlled and evaluated while reports and analyses can be created.

Meerbusch, August 3, 2009 — With the new Procars Cargo 2000 module Riege Software International has created a web-based platform that enables companies involved in the transportation chain to plan, monitor and improve the quality of shipments in line with Cargo 2000. Airlines, air freight forwarders, handling agents and other logistics companies around the world participate in Cargo 2000. The aim of the initiative is to make the transport processes in the air freight industry more reliable and to achieve local improvements through exact process analyses and harmonised quality standards.

Implementation of Cargo 2000 is divided into three phases. Phase 1, the monitoring of airport-to-airport transportation, and Phase 2, the interactive planning and steering of the entire door-to-door process chain, are already integrated into Riege Software International‘s IT platform. Phase 3 will in future enable real-time management at an individual consignment level. The transit times, punctuality and availability of freight at the arrival location will thus become measurable. The accompanying documents of each shipment will serve as the data basis. With the help of electronic reporting not only can costs be optimised but the performance of the entire supply chain can be improved.

Airlines and forwarders can achieve substantial improvements in their performance with Cargo 2000 at very low investment costs. With Procars IT provider Riege Software International offers a harmonised platform on which all the processes can be made available to all participants on a bundled basis. This enables faster comparison of all processes which can then be optimised on an ongoing basis.
Alongside the reliable exchange of information Procars users can also not only monitor all processes but also respond quickly as soon as any problems occur. The Cargo 2000 module can be connected to other Transport Management Systems (TMS) through an interface.

In addition to the official Cargo 2000 requirements, the Riege Software International solution offers complete transparency of the Cargo 2000 status of every shipment in real time. Through the complete integrate of shipment monitoring in the freight management software Procars can offer true added-value compared to other systems.

Integrated logistics is the keyword when it comes to the organisation of worldwide trade flows. Forwarders and airlines which use a harmonised CDMP like Procars benefit from the necessary quality standards and can expand their customer base worldwide. More and more customers rely exclusively on partners meeting the Cargo 2000 quality standards for the transportation of their goods. With the air and ocean freight management system from Riege Software International companies involved in the transportation chain are ideally positioned to meet these requirements and can steer and measure the processes appropriately.

Lothar Möhle, Regional Director EMEA at Cargo 2000, comments: “Especially given the current economic climate, it is extremely important for all players in the air freight industry to identify and eliminate hidden costs. Cargo 2000 offers its members standardised processes and a well-functioning quality management system to achieve this.” He stresses: “Riege Software International, as a long-standing member and now also certified by C2K, supports our members with the technical solutions and expertise to plan, monitor and improve these processes. Unit costs can be reduced by all companies involved in the logistics chain working closely together.”

Integrated Communication in the Air Cargo Sector

Business partners use Cargo Community Systems (CCS) as information hubs for electronic data exchange in the air cargo sector. However, airlines often use different providers of communications systems and data formats, resulting in media breakdowns for freight forwarders. Riege Software International provides a software solution that closes this gap. “Global Connect” receives documents and status updates from forwarders and airlines, converts them into the appropriate format and forwards the messages between the partners.

Meerbusch, July 6, 2009 — With Global Connect from industry supplier Riege Software International air freight forwarders can close their dataflow gap with airlines. For example, the application forwards IATA Cargo IMP messages (Cargo Interchange Message Procedures) and status updates via the Cargo Community System through which the air cargo carrier can best be reached. “With some airlines, data exchange has not been possible to the desired extent,” explained Johannes Riege, CEO of Riege Software International. “Global Connect now enables the exchange of data not only with certain airlines, but fundamentally creates a parallel connection to different cargo community systems,” he said.

In contrast to conventional data exchange through just one CCS (Single-CCS), Global Connect supplies forwarders with data from many more airlines (Multi-CCS). Major transport documents and messages, such as air waybills (AWB), manifest data for the transmission of loading data to the US Customs Service (AMS) and automatic status updates can thus be sent to more airlines. Forwarders also benefit in the transmission of their documents from the transparency and user friendliness of the processes as the implementation of the data takes place automatically with the Global Connect software.

The use of Global Connect also ensures a significant increase in the efficiency of processes between the air cargo partners. This is because the connection of only one other CCS allows the forwarder to communicate with about 30-65 percent more airlines.

The company Astracon Air Sea Transport Concept GmbH already successfully uses the solution of Riege Software International to communicate with airlines. Frank Wannenmacher, CEO of Astracon confirms: “We rely on data exchange with all airlines for the transmission of AMS data and provision of status reports. No other provider could yet offer this service to this extent. For Astracon the use of Global Connect means cost savings without any administrative workload.”

Either exclusive data exchange with one single CCS or a combined operation with several CCS can be configured on an individual basis.
